Return Fire

continued

Return Fire features auto-zooming cameras that pick the best angle for you to view the battlefield. When you are moving fast, the camera zooms out for a better view of what's approaching. The perspective takes getting used to, but the effect is superb. The graphics are sharp, and the soundtrack is a classic--literally. Each vehicle is associated with its own classical theme, like Ride of the Valkyries for the helicopter and the William Tell Overture for the flag-laden jeep. Classical or not, it rocks.

go stand in the corner...alone
This praise aside, Return Fire is a dull one-player game. You don't get to play against a computer-controlled opponent. Instead, you work your way through the various scenarios, attacking unmanned bases. While this gives you the chance to learn the controls, which take a while to master, it gets boring quickly. Don't buy this game if you are easily frustrated with controls, and don't buy this game unless you have a friend who wants to play.

screen shot Return Fire needs network play. Despite my waxing poetic about the split screen, it has some disadvantages, such as a smaller viewing area and the opportunity to spy on your opponent. Mediums usually disappear for a reason. The age of the Internet is here, and although black and white is fine, I see in color.

The inclusion of both split-screen and network play would have made this game nearly perfect. Still, I'd like to thank GT Interactive and Williams Entertainment for bringing a welcome anachronism back to the PC. Return Fire is this year's Ed Wood, and it has earned a star on my computer game Walk of Fame.

Hugh Falk has no clue about the gaming industry in general and wouldn't know a good game if it was crammed down his throat. This biography is dedicated to those hard-working programmers and quality assurance engineers who have taken the time to critique his crappy reviews of their perfect games.
